FAQ: Adjusting Projector Brightness

Q: How is a projectors brightness measured?

Projectors brightness can vary – it is measured in ANSI Lumens which is calculated as the amount of white light projected onto your screen. Home theater projectors w/ a higher Lumen count will brighter levels.

For absolute dark rooms 500-1200 Lumens should be sufficient.

Well-lit rooms you will want a projector with at least 1600 Lumens – ideally 2000-2500, or more.

If you plan to use outside (even at night), you will want to choose a home theater projector with 3000 or more lumens. They are often the most expensive.

Projector Lumens Comparison

Projector Throw Distance

A projectors throw distance is the measurement from your projector to the display screen. Affordable projectors typically have shorter throw distance, therefore limiting the place/scenarios you can show it (such as outdoor movies).

The best home projectors have throw distance of 10-16 ft.
