What is a HEPA Air Purifier
There are many misconceptions about how HEPA air filters work. True HEPA air purifiers are tested and certified by the U.S. Dept. of Energy to filter up to 99.97% of airborne particulates as small as 0.3 microns in diameter.
This means it is practically guaranteed to remove airborne particles and pollutants such as pollen, dust, mold, pet dander and some forms of smoke.
To remove odors and smoke, such as cigarette smoke you should look into purchasing an air purifier with a carbon activated air filter. They are typically much more expensive, but also very high functioning.
In addition to a True HEPA air filter, a home air purifier should include a pre-filter to capture particles larger than 0.3 microns. It is designed to make your air filters last longer before they have to be replaced or washed.
Activated charcoal filter are another good option. Often called Super HEPA, a charcoal filter can filter particles larger than 0.1 micron in size – this includes most forms of virus bacteria, smoke, including cigarette smoke or cigar smoke.
The downside is that activated charcoal air purifiers are much more expensive.
